For the Birds

What a fucking day. Work gets uglier all the time, but I don't really feel at liberty to discuss it here. Let's just say that things are changing, and it's not looking great for the hero of this story.

I left early and chose to heed my advice to myself. I went to Research Park for a walk. I was dying to see some goslings, and I wasn't entirely disappointed.

The Chinese Brown Geese didn't have any babies. They were milling around, same as ever. I imagine someone might have taken their eggs from them to prevent the proliferation of a domesticated species in the park. I was really hoping to get a look at the babies to see if they had that ridiculous lump on the bill. Oh, well. The Canadian geese had a full brood, and I got a close look at them. They look like little ducks with yellow heads.

The ponds, for the most part, have been vacated. The ring-necked ducks and scaups are entirely gone. A few mallards remain, scattered throughout. The banks belong to the doves and pigeons, and the occasional starling. I managed to startle the killdeer pair into scurrying to the shore, but not flying. The water's edge is shared by grackles, coots, and fishermen.

I saw a man catch a fish. I saw a green heron catch one right after that. Kickass.

When I dropped down the hill to the third pond, I found the great blue heron staring at me. He was spitting distance from me--and I don't spit very well. Of course, no camera. I stood and looked at him for a few minutes, and snapped a blurry shot with my phone. It didn't turn out, at all.

On the way out, I saw a single duckling with its parents. It was tiny, tiny. So very adorable.

I had to wear track pants today because I have not shaved my legs. I have decided to take up waxing. I've tried some of those little pre-waxed strips and decided that it's not nearly as painful as people make it out to be. Now, I just have to get some bigger, more effective stuff. This is going to be pretty cool.

Or, I'll just give up and shave later.
